McIntosh and Stanback Pace Women'[s Basketball Past Tusculum

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba ran its record to 4-0 in women’s basketball with a 69-58 win over visiting Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians got a career-high 25 points from Sara McIntosh and a career-best 16 rebounds from Shemya Stanback as they improve to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The Pioneers drop to 1-3 and 0-2.

Catawba moved ahead 31-23 at the break and never trailed in the second half. The Lady Indians would take a 16-point lead three minutes into the third quarter then saw Tusculum make a charge in the final four minutes of the frame.

Down 45-31, the Pioneers used a 13-2 run to pull within three in the final seconds of the third quarter. The lead was whittled down to 51-49 with 8:12 left, but Taisha DeShazo canned a three-pointer then capped a 9-0 run with a follow shot as Catawba went up 60-49 with 5:47 to go.

A three-point play by McIntosh had Catawba up 65-51. Jordan Rogers brought the Pioneers within nine on a three-point play with 3:48 to go, but Janiya Downs hit three of four at the line and Catawba’s defense clamped down on the Pioneers to take the double-digit win.

McIntosh hit on 10-of-14 shots and went 5-of-6 at the line. Stanback collected a double-double with 14 points to go with her 16 boards.

Tusculum got a dozen points from Rogers and Chloe Warrington, who canned four three-pointers. Mya Belton tossed in 11 points with eight rebounds.

Catawba dominated the glass, grabbing 56 rebounds to 38 for the Pioneers. That led to an 18-8 edge in second-chance points.

Catawba travels to Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday for a 5:30 tip with the Lady Railsplitters.
