Spring Ball Update: Week 2

SALISBURY, NC – The Catawba College football team wrapped up week two and are almost finished with their third week of their spring practice slate.

The team will hold one more practice today and another tomorrow at Shuford Stadium before entering their final week of the spring.

Head coach Curtis Walker shared some of his thoughts on what he saw from his team over the last week and a half.

“Practices five through eight in this spring season has proved to be a good week with many guys stepping up within their position group to make the best of spring practice. I look forward to watching continued improvement as we draw closer to the Spring Game on April 9th,” said Walker.

Walker also highlighted some players that showed good things in week two into this week out on the practice field. Walker mentioned wide receivers Pooh Brantley and Jaden Lockhart as they continued to make plays in scrimmage situations. Lockhart turned in a good week after he turned some catches into big plays with yards after the catch in live action.

Defensive ends Christian Campbell and Mike Jones wreaked havoc in the trenches in the second week as Campbell recorded three sacks in scrimmage situations, and Jones had two according to Walker.

Running back Leroy Bracey, Jr. made plays as both a runner and a receiver out the backfield for the Indians in week two, and Walker has liked what Bracey has brought to the table as a dynamic playmaker for his offense this spring.

Jordan Gregg continued to display his leadership in the defensive backfield for the football squad. The junior from Sumter, South Carolina had a big interception in a 3rd down situation in a live session during one of week two’s practices.

Linebacker Christian Bennett led the linebacking core in week two and into week three with solid play and a sack as the local product is coming off a season where he was second on the team in tackles with 43 last fall and had two interceptions.

The football team will enter their final week of spring ball next week which will be capped off with the spring game next Saturday at Shuford Stadium.
