Spiva Blasts Two Homers and Drives in Seven as Catawba Takes Down Newberry

KODAK, TN -- The Catawba College baseball team scored seven runs in the second inning highlighted by a grand slam from Luke Spiva to pull away from two-seeded Newberry in the second game of the SAC Tournament. The Indians won by a final score of 11-4.

Catawba wasted little time getting the bats fired up in Friday's second round action. The Indians had 11 batters come to the plate in the second inning and senior outfielder Luke Spiva blasted a grand slam to right field after Catawba already had a 1-0 lead. After the bomb, Catawba held a 5-0 lead. The bats weren't done as Levi Perrell hit an RBI single up the middle, and Dylan Wilkinson doubled down the left field line which brought home Henderson Lentz to make it 7-1 after two.

Newberry got one back in the bottom of the third and fourth to make the score 7-3, but CatU extinguished the threat with another run in the top of the fifth on a solo homer off the bat of Zack Miller. Luke Spiva came back up to the plate in the top of the sixth with runners on first and second and smacked a three-run shot to right to give the Indians a sizeable 11-3 lead after six innings.

The bullpen did their job on Friday by going eight and a third innings after relieving starter Maddux Holshouser with two outs in the top of the first. Mason Gwyn came in after the lefty and got the win after tossing an inning and two thirds with just one run on a pair of hits. Ryan Street followed Gwyn with another inning and two thirds of relief, then Michael Gracer went three and two-thirds innings strong allowing just one run. Kenny Dollenger closed it out with an inning and a third in the late stages of the game to seal the second round victory for Catawba.

Four different hitters recorded multiple hits led by Spiva's epic two-home run, seven-RBI performance. Zack Miller went 2-for-5 with a homer including a run scored, and Levi Perrell along with Dylan Driver each had a pair of hits in the victory.

The Indians will play the winner of tonight's matchup between Lenoir-Rhyne and Queens tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m.
