Indians Take Down Newberry; Season Comes to an End With Shutout Loss to Wingate

KODAK, TN – The Catawba College baseball team fought hard to keep their season alive on Sunday as the Indians defeated the Newberry Wolves, 14-7, in their first game of the day. Then Catawba had to turn around and play the top-seeded Wingate Bulldogs in a game that did not start until 9:30 p.m. The Indians had just three hits and were shutout, 6-0, as their season came to an end.

Newberry Game

Right-hander Ryan Street took on a new role as the relief pitcher got his first start of the season in his 23rd appearance. Street started off solid by tossing a 1-2-3 quick first inning to bring up Catawba’s offense.

The Indians took advantage of mistakes by Newberry in their first at-bat on a throwing error to allow Levi Perrell to reach safely. A passed ball and a wild pitch allowed Perrell to reach third before Luke Spiva walked to put runners on the corners. Dylan Driver brought home the first run with an RBI fielder’s choice up the middle, and Dylan Wilkinson came up and delivered a two-run blast to get the Indians a 3-0 lead after one.

Newberry answered back with a pair of runs when a double down the left field line brought in base runners that reach earlier on a walk and a single. After the top of the second, CatU led, 3-2.

The Indians continued their offensive surge in the bottom of the second inning and extended the lead. Cameron Mills led off with a walk, Braxton Davis singled, and Carlos Lara reached on a fielding error on a bunt attempt. With the bases loaded, the Wolves threw a wild pitch to advance each runner up one spot and give Catawba a 4-2 advantage.

Levi Perrell grounded out to short to bring in another run, and Dylan Driver did a job by laying down a bunt, and Carlos Lara slid around the tag at the plate. This play was reviewed and the call at home stood as called, and Catawba went up 6-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Braxton Davis laced a single up the middle to allow Wilkinson to come home and extend the lead to five runs, 7-2.

Catawba delivered the knockout blow in the bottom of the seventh inning. The first three batters reached base safely and Cameron Mills scored from third base on a wild pitch. Dylan Driver smacked an RBI single, Henderson Lentz launched a two-RBI double, and Zack Miller brought home two more with a double as well to make blow the game wide open at 14-2.

This was plenty of insurance for the rest of the way despite the Wolves scoring five runs in the last inning. Catawba advanced with a 14-7 victory, eliminating Newberry.

Wingate Game

With the win, the Indians had to play back-to-back games and the defending national champion Wingate Bulldogs stood between Catawba and the SAC Championship.

After scoring 14 runs less than an hour before, Wingate was able to keep Catawba off the board for the entirety of the nightcap. The Indians had just three hits and five total base runners as Bulldog starter Mitch Farris stayed firmly in control throughout.

Wingate got their pitcher some run support in the early going with an RBI ground out in the first and another run came in on another RBI ground out in the second inning to make it 2-0.

Catawba fell deeper in the hole when Wingate plated two more runs in the top of the third inning after a lead off double, a walk, and a single to right made it a 3-0 deficit then, another RBI ground out put Catawba behind, 4-0.

The Indians were unable to capitalize on a pair of errors on WU in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Wingate launched a solo homer in the sixth to increase their advantage to five runs. The Bulldogs put it out of reach with another run on a fielder’s choice. Catawba was unable to turn the inning-ending double play as the Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead into CatU’s final at-bat.

Luke Spiva had a one-out single, but the final two outs were recorded as the Bulldogs’ pitcher threw a complete-game shutout without allowing a base runner to reach third base. Catawba’s season ended with a 6-0 defeat, and the Indians finished the year with a 31-24 overall record.
