Track & Field Shines at SAC Championships; Women Finish 5th and Men Finish 6th

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Catawba College tack and field team turned in a solid performance at the South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships on Thursday and Friday. MeKayla White, Brien Pittman, and Raina Andrews were conference champions after winning their events, and Ethan Bemis, Skylar Payne, and Matthew Fowler earned all-conference honors after finishing in the top three of their events.

On the women's side, Catawba finished fifth out of 11 teams after collecting 54 total points while Lenoir-Rhyne won the women's title with 174.5 points. The Catawba men finished sixth out of 11 teams with 47 points while Wingate took the team title with 148.5 points.

Catawba had three first place finishes, seven total all-conference performances, and broke nine school records in the final team meet of the outdoor season. MeKayla White captured her third outdoor conference championship in the long jump with a leap of 5.82 meters. She also finished second in the triple jump after with a mark of 11.90 meters, just .06 meters behind first.

Senior sprinter Brien Pittman continued to heat up ahead of the NCAA Outdoor nationals. The Greensboro native shaved more time off his school record time in the 400-meters on Friday with a conference-winning time of 46.65. Coming into this spring, no Catawba athlete has ran the 400 in under 47 seconds, but Pittman has done it twice in a three-week span. This time set a new school record, gave Pittman his second conference title in as many years at the SAC Outdoor meet, and put him in the top-five nationally in the 400.

One of the biggest surprises of the weekend was Raina Andrews. Andrews came into the SAC meet ranked 20th in the conference in the women's 800 meters, but she edged out Queens' Stina Pettersson by .28 seconds to capture the conference title. Her conference-winning time of 2:16.36 also set a new program record in the event as Andrews made the incredible run to top the podium.

Other all-conference performers were Ethan Bemis, Matthew Fowler, and Skylar Payne. Bemis made his way to the podium with a third place finish in the men's 800 with a time of 1:54.02. Matthew Fowler also took home a third place finish for his performance in the men's 10k event. Fowler finished the race in 30:40.08 to capture his best finish at the SAC Championships. Rounding out the top finishes for Catawba was Skylar Payne who made the podium at the SAC Outdoor Championship meet for the first time in her career. Payne turned in a second place finish in the 400-meter hurdles after running a program-record time of 1:02.60 finishing just .09 seconds behind first place.

Five other individuals and two of Catawba's relay teams set school records over the last two days. Carmen Bishop finished fifth in the women's javelin throw and snapped the school record with a 35.84-meter toss. Aislynn Reagle finished seventh in the 3k steeplechase but she did so in record-setting fashion with a 12:11.14. Miracle Etim-Andy finished just outside the top-three in the women's discus, but she did set a new program record with a throw of 39.30 meters for a fourth place finish. Javier Gomez-Wilson finished in the top-five in the men's triple jump and snapped the program mark with his best jump of 14.48 meters.

Finally, the men's 4x400 and the women's 4x100 relay teams each set new program-bests in their respective events. In the men's 4x4, the tandem of Chandon Smith, Tyler Johnson, Braxton Ford, and Brien Pittman finished in fourth place yet snapped a three-year old school record with a time of 3:17.78. The women's 4x100 relay team featuring Kori Addison, Alexis Devlin, Kierra Jones, and Mallory Witherspoon set a new program-best time with a 47.54 which was good enough for fourth place.
