Men's Soccer falls in battle of top regional teamsWINGATE, NC -- Wingate’s Benj Bostic (Wingate, NC) scored two goals to lead the Bulldogs to a 5-3 victory over 19th-ranked Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’ soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. With the win, Wingate improves to 6-1-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the SAC, while the Indians fall to 6-2 and 2-1. Indian Nathan Zuzga (Troy, MI) scored twice for Catawba. The Indians are the number three team in the NCAA Division II Appalachian Region, while the Bulldogs are the number four team in the same poll. The Bulldogs scored two goals in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Thomas Szvetitz (Valrico, FL) opened the scoring at the 15:56 mark. The four-year starter settled a loose ball and fired it inside the right post for his fourth goal of the season. Freshman James Lavery (Belfast, N. IRELAND) notched the first goal of his Bulldog career in the 19th minute. Bulldog senior Randy Lazicki (McAfee, NJ) sent a pass downfield to Bostic, who found a wide-open Lavery on the right side. The Bulldogs built the lead to 3-0 after intermission. Bostic tallied his first goal at the 46:34 plateau. Lavery sent a corner kick across the goal mouth and Bostic’s header found the back of the nets. Following the first of two Zuzga goals, Bostic added his second tally at 74:15 to make the score 4-1. Catawba freshman Garth McCormack (Charlotte, NC) tallied for the visitors at 75:10 to cut the margin to 4-2. Wingate junior midfielder Kevin Benfield (Charlotte, NC) scored the final goal for the hosts at 76:48. Zuzga notched his second goal in the 88th minute to complete the scoring. The Indians outshot the Bulldogs 11-10. Wingate freshman netminder Brian Noell (Hickory, NC) recorded three saves, while Catawba counterpart Brian Roe (Clearwater, FL) made two saves.
