ROCK HILL, SC -- The South Atlantic Conference has announced its Football Players of the Week for the week ending on October 3. Earning honors this week are Catawba College quarterback Luke Samples, Lenoir-Rhyne College linebacker Rian Jefferson and Presbyterian College punter Philip Bernardi.
Samples, a 6-3, 235-pound senior from Elkin, N.C., earns this honor for the third time this season. He passed for a season-high 337 yards and three scores as No. 6 Catawba remained undefeated with a 44-21 win at Mars Hill College. Two of his scoring strikes came early in the third quarter after Mars Hill had trimmed the Tribe lead to 16-14. Samples has thrown for 1,188 yards this season with 11 touchdowns in five games, and has completed 66.2 percent of his attempts.

Bernardi, a 6-4, 248-pound senior from Marietta, Ga., averaged 45.5 yards per punt, including two inside the 20-yard line as Presbyterian rallied to a 12-7 road win at Tusculum College. Bernardi boomed a 58-yarder pinning the Pioneers at the TC 12 which would eventually set up PC with the ball, resulting in a go ahead TD with 31 seconds left in the contest.
