Football to host playoff game on Saturday

Catawba College has earned a third straight trip to the NCAA Division II Football Playoffs, it was announced Sunday in Indianapolis, IN. Not only will the Tribe compete for the third straight year, it was host a first round game for the third time. Catawba won its previous first round games, 48-17 over Fort Valley State in 1999 and 28-24 over West Georgia last season. This year, Catawba will entertain the University of Central Arkansas on Nov. 17 at Shuford Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Catawba, 9-1 and ranked ninth in the AFCA poll, is coming off a 31-14 win over Lenoir- Rhyne to give the Indians their second straight South Atlantic Conference Championship. Central Arkansas, ranked eighth by the AFCA poll, fell in its regular season finale, 33-28 to Arkansas Tech. The Bears of the Gulf South Conference enter the playoffs with a 9-2 record. While this is the third straight post-season appearance for Catawba, Central Arkansas is making the playoffs for the first time since participating in the 1992 NAIA playoffs. That season, the Bears advanced to the NAIA semifinals. UCA sports one of the nation's top offenses, averaging over 550 yards and 42 points per game. Catawba is ranked among the best in the nation on defense and allows only 11 points per contest. The other South Region game will see Fort Valley State travel to Valdosta State. The region winner will face the Northeast Region Champion in the national semifinals. In the first round, Bloomsburg travels to Grand Valley State, while Saginaw Valley State hosts Indiana, of Pennsylvania. In the Midwest, Winona State travels to North Dakota and Nebraska-Omaha travels to Pittsburg State. The West Region sees Chadron State hosting Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Kingsville hosting California-Davis. ######
