Gilwala's goal in closing minutes lifts Men's Soccer to win

WILSON, NC -- Catawba College, despite playing a man down for the final 43 minutes, was able to edge Barton, 3-2, in menís soccer action on Saturday afternoon. It was the season opener for both teams. The Indians, ranked 20th in the preseason national D-II poll, were tied 1-1 with Barton early in the second half when Kenny Crowe (Reeders, PA) was ejected with a second yellow card. The Tribe would proceed to take a 2-1 lead just two minutes later on a goal by Jason Dumond (Coppell, TX). His goal came off a cross from Seth Clark (Huntersville, NC) that was deflected. Barton countered with a goal in the 79th minute for a 2-2 deadlock. Hector Bermudez received a long pass from Ike Onyeador and beat the Indians keeper. The Indians secured the win at 88:08 when Zay-Zay Gilewala (Monrovia, LIBERIA) got free and scored a breakaway goal. Barton had taken a 1-0 lead at 4:45 when Scott Summers reeled in a long pass from Daniel Hileman for the seasonís first goal. Gilewala hit Gareth Turnbull (Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND) with a pass inside the goalie box at 25:01 for a 1-1 tie, which was the score at halftime. The Indians outshot the Bulldogs 21-7. Dan Fitzgerald (Seaford, DE) had two saves for Catawba while Matt Coble tallied 11 saves for Barton. #####
