Ellington named SAC Football Player of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. --- The South Atlantic Conference has announced its Football Players of the Week. Earning honors for the week ending on October 1 are Carson-Newman quarterback Justin Long, Catawba linebacker Ron Ellington and Newberry punter/kicker Ryan Lukshis. Long was named Offensive Player of the Week, Ellington Defensive Player of the Week and Lukshis was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week.
Ellington, a 6-4, 225-pound sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., established school records with seven sacks (6 solo, 2 assists) and 11 tackles for loss in Catawba’s 31-0 win over Mars Hill. The Indians held the Lions to just 91 total yards for the game, including -36 yards on the ground thanks in part to Ellington’s -62 yards in losses. Nearly half of (13) of his 28 tackles this season have been behind the line of scrimmage. The Independence High School graduate finished the game with 15 tackles and a quarterback hurry.
Long, a 6-1 sophomore from Knoxville, Tenn., came off the bench to spark Carson-Newman’s 41-28 come-from-behind win over Newberry. Long rushed for 125 yards on 21 carries, including a touchdown. The Fulton High School graduate went 6-for-11 for 100 yards through the air and tossed a TD. Long gave the No. 15 Eagles the lead 21-19 when he connected with Willie McRae for a 29-yard TD strike with 56 seconds left before halftime. Long was instrumental in C-N rolling up 541 yards offensively against the Indians.
Lukshis, a 5-11, 155-pound sophomore from Irmo, S.C., scored 10 points in Newberry’s home loss to nationally-ranked Carson-Newman. The Dutch Fork High School alum connected on all three of his field goal attempts, including a career long 43-yarder just before halftime as the Indians led 22-21 over the No. 15 Eagles. He also averaged 40.2 yards on his five punt attempts, including a long of 50 yards and one inside the 20-yard line.
The SAC Football Players of the Week are selected by a vote of the league’s eight sports information directors.
