Davis, Hampton lift Women's Basketball to first win

SALISBURY, NC -- Host Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne were victorious in women’s basketball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym in the Catawba Classic sponsored by Comfort Suites. Catawba (1-3) earned a 62-50 win over USC-Aiken (2-3), while Lenoir-Rhyne (3-2) topped J.C. Smith (1-3) 62-54. Catawba used a 20-4 run midway through the second half to take control against the Lady Pacers. USC-Aiken held a 36-32 lead with 14:49 left after a Jordan Thomas (Denver, CO) layup, but a jumper by Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) sparked a 7-0 run to put Catawba on top 39-36 with 11:10 left. The Lady Pacers pulled within 41-40 at the 10:15 mark on a layin by Satu Leppanen (Espoo, FINLAND) then saw Catawba reel off 11 straight points to take a 52-40 edge with 7:55 left. Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, VA), who had half of the points in the 20-4 run, capped the surge with a three-pointer with 7:55 remaining. USC-Aiken clawed back within 52-47 at the 3:31 mark on a free throw by Leppanen, but could get no closer. Catawba scored the next eight points to ice the issue. After shooting just 26% in the opening half, the Lady Indians heated up to can 52% in the final half. Catawba also held a 44-37 edge on the boards. Both Hampton and Davis tallied 15 points to lead Catawba. Hampton’s tally marked a career-high. Davis added nine boards, while Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) also reached double figures with 11 points and nine rebounds. Leppanen led all scorers with 17 points for the Lady Pacers and added eight rebounds. Mindy Allee (Clayton, WI) tossed in 10 points. Lenoir-Rhyne built a 16-point lead with 11 minutes remaining then had to hold off J.C. Smith to earn its win. Trailing 41-25 with 11:11 to go, the Lady Bulls rallied to within four with five minutes to play. Tiana Pope (Albany, GA) keyed the rally, scoring a dozen points in the 16-4 run. Sandi Hyatt (Albemarle, NC) stopped the surge with a three-pointer for Lenoir-Rhyne, who went on to build its edge back to 55-54 with 3:28 to go. The Bears used a 45-37 edge in rebounding to help offset 24 turnovers. Joanie White (Claremont, NC) and Shannon Jones (Warrenton, NC) each posted double-doubles for Lenior-Rhyne. White led all scorers with 26 points and added 10 rebounds, while Jones tallied 10 points and 15 boards. Pope and Shemika Jones (Largo, MD) each tossed in 16 points for J.C. Smith. Rochelle Bodie (Raleigh, NC) had 17 rebounds. #####
