Men's Basketball tops cross-town rival LivingstoneSALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College men's basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with an 87-77 win over Livingstone on Saturday afternoon at New Treny Gym. All five Indian starters scored in double figures, led by Duke Phipps (Newport News, VA), who tallied a career-high 22 points. Livingstone falls to 1-4. Catawba raced out to a 16-4 lead in the opening three minutes, but the steadily cut into the deficit and grabbed the lead on a layup by Michael Morrison at 28-26 with 6:15 left in the half. Catawba took the lead back on a three-pointer by Alex Luyk (Madrid, SPAIN) at the 1:37 mark and led 36-34 at the break.
Catawba would regain its double digit advantage six minutes into the second half and kept a comfortable margin the rest of the way. Besides Phipps, three Catawba players recorded double-doubles. Luyk had 11 points and 10 boards, while Brian Carter (Alexandria, VA) had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Terrence Hamilton (Dillon, SC) tossed in 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Kevin Petty (Sanford, NC) had 11 points. Jerome LaGrange led the hosts with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Chris Johnson had 18 points and nine boards.
