Football wins Mayor's Cup Trophy with 35-6 win over Livingstone
SALISBURY, NC – Junior Brent Johnson (Hickory, NC) caught a pair of touchdown passes to help 25th-ranked Catawba to a 35-6 win over cross-town rival Livingstone in football action in the annual Mayor’s Cup Game held on Saturday night at Alumni Stadium.
The Catawba Indians improve to 2-0 on the year, while the host Blue Bears fall to 0-3.After holding Livingstone to begin the contest, the Catawba offense moved quickly using four plays to cover 73 yards to take the early lead.
Brad Roach (Williamston, NC) was a perfect 4-of-4 on the drive with Brandon Johnson hauling in the 37-yard scoring strike just 3:23 into the contest. Catawba would add a second score in the opening quarter on a 15-yard run by Robert Robinson (Vidalia, GA). Catawba put the game away in the second quarter with three scores.
Brandon Johnson made his second touchdown catch from six-yards out with 8:10 left before the half and Jamelle Cuthbertson (Charlotte, NC) scored on a three-year run at the 1:44 mark.
Darryl Locklear (Pembroke, NC) capped the first half by blocking a punt with 10 seconds remaining in the half and returning it 29 yards for a touchdown. Livingstone put its points on the board with 5:47 to play on a 51-yard fumble return by Valentine Bon. Roach was 15-of-18 for 220 yards in one half of action to lead Catawba.
Lance Johnson (Hickory, NC) had four grabs for 56 yards, while Brandon Johnson had three for 55 and the two scores. Cuthbertson led the Tribe rushers with 49 yards on 10 carries. The Catawba defense held Livingstone to 157 yards, while recording three sacks and forcing three fumbles. Box Score #####
