Men's Soccer wins league opener at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Junior Ryan Villiard (Holiday, FL) scored off a cross in the 51st minute to lift Catawba to a 3-1 win over host Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action on Wednesday night at Meares Stadium.
The Catawba Indians improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 4-3 and 0-2. Kyle Jones (Tallahassee, FL) scored the first goal of the match for the Tribe on a breakaway at the 34:04 mark. Jonathan Adams (Tampa, FL) tied the match five minutes later with a header off a corner kick from Matt Welch (Hattiesburg, MS).
The teams took the 1-1 tie into the locker room at halftime. Villiard gave Catawba a 2-1 advantage at the 50:22 mark, driving home a cross from Nathan Zuzga (Troy, MI). Zuzga later extended Catawba's lead to 3-1 off a lead pass from Nathan Brown (Huntersville, NC) ten minutes from time. Catawba out-shot the Lions, 23-to-11.
Josiah Larson (Falls Church, VA) played all but four minutes in goal for Mars Hill and made five saves. Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA) went the distance in goal for Catawba and made one save. “It was a good, hard-fought win to open up conference play,” said Catawba Coach Craig Turnbull. “We played hard and to Mars Hill’s credit they picked up their play after our first goal and we didn’t respond. In the second half we played with better pace and focus and executed our game plan. We have played young players all season and they are beginning to come into form.”
