Men's Soccer suffers tough overtime loss to #6 Carson-Newman
SALISBURY, NC -- Senior Carlos Maqueda (Knoxville, TN) scored with just over four minutes remaining in the second overtime period to lift sixth-ranked Carson-Newman to a 1-0 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 7-0-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 8-4 and 2-2. Although the teams combined for 35 shots only 10 of those were on goal, aiding in the scoreless match through regulation. Each team had solid chances in the first overtime period, but Omar Cooke (Vinton, VA) was denied by Catawba keeper Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA) and the Eagles couldn’t get a foot on the loose ball before it was cleared away.
Later, Catawba could not get a foot on a loose ball in the box before Jamie Robinson (Shelby, NC) fired just wide. Maqueda had missed wide with a long strike early in the second overtime period, but found the net on a second try from 30 yards out win the 106th minute. Held made two saves for Catawba, while Tyler Baldock (Surrey, BC, CANADA) recorded six saves in picking up the shutout for Carson-Newman.
