Sconyers named SAC Football Defensive Player of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The South Atlantic Conference has announced its Football Players of the Week. Earning honors for the week ending on November 4 are Carson-Newman running back Buck Wakefield, Catawba linebacker Lester Sconyers and Tusculum punter John Gregory. Wakefield was named Offensive Player of the Week, Sconyers Defensive Player of the Week and Gregory was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week.
Sconyers, a 5-11, 220-pound senior from New Bern, N.C., made eight t ackles and intercepted a pass on the goal line to preserve Catawba's 21-14 victory over Presbyterian. Sconyers, a New Bern High School product, saved the game in the final minute for the Catawba Indians, stopping PC on third down and one from the three yard line.
Wakefield, a 5-9, 165-pound freshman from Drummonds, Tenn., scored three touchdowns to lead Carson-Newman to a 52-14 win over No. 24 Wingate. The Mumford High School graduate rushed for 67 yards on 10 carries, including a 33-yard touchdown run following a Wingate turnover.
Gregory, a 6-2, 210-pound freshman from Ootlewah, Tenn., averaged 41.8 yards on his 10 punts in Tusculum's 24-17 road win at Mars Hill. Gregory, who earns this honor for a third time this season, pinned Mars Hill inside the 20-yard line three times, including two punts of 50-plus yards with a long of 56. Gregory's 418 punting yards are the second most in a game in school history. He established the school record earlier this season with 424.
The SAC Football Players of the Week are selected by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
