Bell Sparks Football to Opening Win
MURFREESBORO, NC – Catawba spotted host Chowan an early touchdown then scored 55 unanswered points to take a season-opening 55-7 win over the Hawks in football action on Saturday afternoon at Garrison Stadium. It marked the 13th straight win in a season opener for the Catawba Indians.
Chowan used four plays to grab the early lead. James Fox took a short pass from Josh Floyd and raced 54 yards to stake the Hawks to a 7-0 lead after a minute of play.
Transfer George Bell (Fayetteville, NC/Britt HS) made an immediate impact for his new team as he returned the ensuing kickoff 69 yards down to the Chowan 16-yard-line. Bell would finish off the drive on a one-yard dive to tie the score at 7-7. On the next Catawba possession, Brad Roach (Williamston, NC/Williamston HS) connected with Antwan Strong (Charlotte, NC/W. Charlotte HS) for a 39-yard strike at the 8:01 mark of the opener quarter to put the Tribe up for good.
Jamelle Cuthbertson (Charlotte, NC/Harding HS) capped an 86-yard drive with a four-yard run at the end of the first quarter and Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC/New Bern HS) toted in from five yards away for a 28-7 edge. Bell galloped 70 yards for a 35-7 lead and James House (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS) capped the first-half scoring as he recovered a fumble in the end zone following a Brandon Sutton (Snow Hill, NC/Greene Central HS) sack.
After a scoreless third quarter, Catawba tacked on two more scores in the final frame. Antonio Hall (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford HS) ran in from 24 yards and Trevor Steele (Asheville, NC/Reynolds HS) scored on a one-yard plunge.
Catawba totaled 443 yards of offense, including 203 on the ground. Bell led the way with 89 yards on four carries. Roach was 9-of-13 for 146 yards.
