Football Rolls Over Fayetteville State Despite Six Turnovers


SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba rolled up 556 yards of total offense in a 46-7 victory over visiting Fayetteville State in football action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.  The 18th-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 4-0, while the Broncos fall to 0-3.

 The Indians picked up 288 yards on the ground and threw for another 268 in the win.  Senior tailback Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC/New Bern HS) led the way as he ran for 131 yards and two scores.  Brad Roach (Williamston, NC/Williamston HS) completed 12-of-19 passes for 212 yards.  Fayetteville State was limited to 135 total yards, 73 rushing and 62 passing. 

 Catawba drove 58 yards on the game’s first possession to take the lead on a 30-yard strike from Roach to Joe Mitchell (Tallahassee, FL/Florida HS).  The Indians would turn the ball over on each of their next three possessions and saw the Broncos tie the score as Maurice Mitchell (Charlotte, NC) returned a fumble 51 yards for a touchdown with 5:52 to go in the opening quarter.

Catawba answered right back with a 63-yard drive that was capped by a 13-yard run by Jamelle Cuthberton (Charlotte, NC/Harding HS).  George Bell (Fayetteville, NC/Britt HS) scored the first of his two touchdowns early in the second quarter for a 20-7 lead and Fisher scored at the 5:35 mark of the quarter to give Catawba a 26-7 edge at the half. 

The Indians scored on each of their first two second-half possessions, getting scoring runs by Roach and Fisher for a 40-7 advantage.  Bell would cap the scoring with 11:22 remaining.

Cuthbertson followed Fisher with 78 yards rushing, while Bell added 61 yards.  Antwan Strong (Charlotte, NC/W. Charlotte HS) had five catches for 135 yards.  On defense, both Joe Brown (New Bern, NC/New Bern HS) and Charlie Walker (Columbus, GA/Hardaway HS) recorded seven tackles with a sack and fumble recovery.

Terrel Allen (Wilmington, NC) was credited with 13 tackles for Fayetteville State, while Mitchell returned a fumble for a score and blocked two point-after attempts.  Richard Medlin (Garner, NC) led the Broncos as he rushed for 82 yards.  Bryan Hardy (Vanceboro, NC) threw for 62 yards on 7-of-21 passing.

Catawba will take a week off before its next game against Mars Hill on Thursday, September 27.  That game will be a nationally televised game on CSTV and Fox South.  Fayetteville State will host Bowie State next Saturday night.
