Men's Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision at Belmont Abbey
BELMONT, NC -- Belmont Abbey scored single goals in each half and defeated visiting Catawba 2-0 in men’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The match was delayed 30 minutes due to a severe storm, and it was played in a steady rain. The Crusaders improve to 3-2, while the Catawba Indians slip to 1-4.
The Crusaders outshot the Indians 19-9 and scored the only goal they would need in the 19th minute. Senior Paul Goding dribbled down the right side, beat a defender and sailed a crossing pass to the center of the box, where sophomore Michael Scharville volleyed home his first goal of the year.
That was all of the scoring until the 64th minute when Logan Rhea scored his second goal of the year, off of a pass from Adam Gray. Gray fired a shot that was saved by Catawba goalkeeper Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS), but his carom went right to Rhea, who fired a shot into the empty net for the goal.
Belmont Abbey held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks, and goalkeeper Bryan Alenky made four saves in the net. Held finished with nine saves for Catawba.
