Short-Handed Men's Soccer Team Rallies To Knock Off Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba scored twice in the final 15 minutes, rallying for a 2-1 victory over Wingate in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Thursday night at Frock Field. The win lifts the Catawba Indians to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 5-4-1 and 0-2.
Three Catawba freshmen accounted for the scoring. Down a goal, Alex Koslick (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) and Carter Richardson (Peachtree City, GA/Woodward Academy) played a quality give-and-go at the top of the box with Koslick receiving the pass back and drilling a shot that was deflected by Bulldog keeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, NC), but bounded into the net at the 74:58 mark to tie the match.
Four minutes after the equalizing goal, Richardson provided his second assist as he avoided two Wingate defenders and pushed a pass to Kevin Sorensen (Matthew, NC/Butler HS). Sorensen threaded a shot past a diving Calandra just inside the right post for the game winner.
Wingate had seized the lead four minutes into the second half as Andru Harris (Duluth, GA) headed home a free kick from Thomas Poole (Birmingham, ENGLAND). Catawba keeper Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) made eight saves for the Indians, including one on a breakaway bv Sandre’ Wilson (Mandeville, JAMAICA) in the 64th minute, who then fired high on the rebound.
Calandra recorded four saves for Wingate. The Bulldogs enjoyed an 18-10 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Catawba played without two starters, David Bloom (Marietta, GA/Lassiter HS) and Chad Villiard (Holiday, FL/Mitchell HS), who received red cards in the Indians’ previous match at Mars Hill.
