Men's Soccer Falls 5-0 in Rain at LR
HICKORY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne claimed a 5-0 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at a wet Bears Field. With the win, the Bears improve to 6-3-1 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 3-8 and 1-2.
L-R freshmen Randy Taylor (Albany, NY) and Ryan Shanaghan (Pensacola, FL) each scored twice in the win. Taylor would add two assists on the evening.
Taylor opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he scored off a deflection by Catawba keeper Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS), who made a save on a breakaway. Ten minutes later, Aaron Wheeler (Baltimore, MD) gave the Bears a 2-0 advantage after scoring on a cross to the middle by Taylor.
L-R scored three times in the second half with Shanaghan scoring off a ball that hit the cross bar at the 50:28 mark. Taylor and Shanaghan later followed with L-R's fourth and fifth goals in the 62nd and 64th minutes to round out the scoring. Each assisted on the other's goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Matthew DiCerbo (Boca Raton, FL) picked up the win in goal for L-R, who held a 25-5 advantage in shots. He shared duties with Bart Keeler (Snellville, GA). Held made six saves for the Indians. Ross Willard (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS) played the final 28 minutes and had two saves.
