SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba freshman Carter Richardson (Peachtree City, GA/Woodward Acadamy) scored on a rebound 1:24 into overtime to lift the host Indians to a 1-0 win over Brevard in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. The win sends the Catawba Indians into the SAC Tournament, improving to 4-13 overall and 2-6 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 5-14-1 and 1-7.
After the teams battled to a scoreless draw, Catawba got a quick scoring chance in the extra time. Senior David Bloom (Marietta, GA/Lassiter HS) had an initial shot saved by Tornado keeper Jerry Hatsady Orlando, FL), but the rebound fell to Richardson, who scored into an empty net at the 91:24 mark.
Catawba held a 16-10 edge in shots in the physical battle. The teams combined for 41 fouls with the Tornados being whistled for 23. Hatsady made eight saves for Brevard, including stopping a penalty kick from Bloom in the fourth minute. Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) stopped four shots for Catawba.
The Tornados had the best chances in the second half to score, but Ian Townson Boiling Springs, SC) fired wide on a breakaway with just three minutes left and Douglas Neill (Inellan, SCOTLAND) blasted a shot high in the 78th minute. In addition to the penalty kick, Catawba nearly scored in the opening half, but a low 35-yard shot from Chad Villiard (Holiday, FL/Mitchell HS) was tipped wide on a dive by Hatsady.
