Men's Soccer Strikes Early, But Falls to #19 Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- Wingate punched a 4-2 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at the Wingate Soccer Complex. The win improves the 19th-ranked Bulldogs to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians end a four-match non-losing streak and fall to 4-5-1 and 0-1-1.
Catawba drew first blood with a goal just four minutes into the match. Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) headed home a cross from Deon Cuffie-Joseph (Arima, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO) at the 4:08 mark to give the Tribe the early lead.
Wingate got a pair of goals late in the first half to take the lead to the break. Luke Mulholland scored the first of his two goals after a through ball from Jack Vundum in the 33rd minute to equalize. The Bulldogs took the lead on a strike by Jamie McKenna in the 40th minute.
Despite a huge edge in shots, Wingate did not ice the match until consecutive goals in a minute span late in the contest. Mulholland got his second at the 77:22 mark and Piero Riva converted a penalty kick 49 seconds later for a 4-1 edge. Andrew Landry (Oshawa, Ontario, CANADA/Donevan Institute) got the final tally in the 82nd minute.
