Landry Scores Twice, but Men's Soccer Falls in Final Minutes
SALISBURY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne‘s John Ferguson (Fife, SCOTLAND) scored with just over three minutes to play to lift the Bears to a 3-2 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The Bears improve to 6-4-1 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 4-6-1 and 0-2-1.
Gary Higgins (Paisley, SCOTLAND) provided the Bears with the early lead as he ripped a shot from 25 yards out into the upper right corner in the fourth minute. The Indians struck back in the eighth minute. Andrew Landry (Oshawa, Ontario, CANADA/Donevan Institute) took a through ball from Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS), dribbled in 15 yards and connected from the top of the box.
Lenoir-Rhyne grabbed the lead again in the 23rd minute. Ferguson flicked a pass from Dave Bailey (Bath, ENGLAND) onto the foot of Martin Graham (Cumbria, ENGLAND), who beat Tribe keeper Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) from 10 yards.
The Bears threatened again as it fired 15 of its 26 shots in the opening half. Two of those shots were saved off the line by Catawba defenders 30 seconds apart. Spencer Preston (Estero, FL/Estero HS) knocked away the first attempt and Kirby Freeland (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) stopped a shot on the ensuing corner kick.
Landry would equalize again for Catawba inside the final minute of the half. He took a pass from Alain Lengliz (Blackpool, ENGLAND) and slid a shot under Bear keeper Tom Heath (Solihull, ENGLAND) from the top of the box.
Held would make 10 saves for Catawba, one of the best off a shot from Daniel Jones (Wrexham, WALES) in the 78th minute. Higgins helped set up the final goal as another long shot was saved by Held, but the ball trickled wide of the goal for a corner. Ferguson would collect a loose ball following the corner and scored from 10 yards out.
Heath made a pair of saves for the Bears. Lenoir-Rhyne had a decided 26-11 edge in shots and took 11 corners to just five for Catawba.
