Faughnan's OT Header Snaps Three-Game Slide for Men's Soccer
CHARLOTTE, NC -- Freshman Corey Faughnan (Jacksonville, FL/Jacksonville HS) headed home the game winner with just under three minutes left in overtime to lift Catawba to a 2-1 win over host Queens in men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at the Queens Sports Complex. The Catawba Indians snap a three-match losing streak and improve to 6-4-1. The Royals fall to 4-6.
Queens opened the scoring in the first half at the 30 minute mark. After a Catawba foul, Justin Ferguson delivered a free kick into the box that Gersi Cilingiri headed home for the 1-0 lead. The Indians battled back and got the equalizer on the hour on a breakaway goal by Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS).
As the clock ticked down, Valentin Nava (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) served a cross to Faughnan who scored at the 107:20 mark. Catawba had a 5-3 edge in shots in the extra time and a 20-17 advantage for the match. Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex) collected six saves for the Indians. Giancarlo Aristondo stopped five shots for Queens.
