Lincoln Memorial Slips Past Men's Soccer 1-0
SALISBURY, NC -- Lucas Pereira (Monte Siao, BRAZIL) scored just before the half to lift visiting Lincoln Memorial to a 1-0 win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. The Railsplitters improve to 8-3-1 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 7-6-1 and 1-5.
In a physical battle that featured 35 fouls and nine cards, the Railsplitters notched the lone goal following a corner kick. After the corner was cleared out, Fernando Silveira (Brasilia, BRAZIL) sent a cross back into the box that Pereira was able to head in at the 42:45 mark.
Catawba held a 9-8 edge in shots in the second half, but could not break through. The best chance came early in the second half when a shot by Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) was blocked and a follow shot by Corey Faughnan (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS) was saved. On the save by Michael Watkins (Statesville, NC) the rebound fell to Ezra Ntirugelegwa (Durham, NC/Jordan HS), who fired over the bar from short range.
Watkins collected six saves for the Railsplitters. Catawba keeper Luke McCarthy (Naples, FL/Naples HS) made seven stops. Newberry was whistled for 21 fouls to just six for the Indians.
