Lenoir-Rhyne Uses Early Goals to Down Men's Soccer


HICKORY, NC -- Catawba dropped a 5-0 decision to host Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Thursday night at the Moretz Sports Athletic Complex.  Nikki Matthews tallied three goals to help the Bears improve to 9-7 overall and 4-4 in the SAC.  The Catawba Indians fall to 9-7-1 overall and 2-6.

Matthews got Lenoir-Rhyne on the board quickly, pouncing on a deflection off a free kick in the fifth minute.  The Bears took control 15 minutes later as they tallied twice in a span of a minute.  Matthews added a second at the 20:42 mark then Chibuzo Nwosu followed at the 21:34 mark. 

In the second half, Matthews followed up a blocked shot for his third of the night and Adam Douglas capped the scoring with just over ten minutes to play.  Jordan Holmes registered a pair of assists fore the Bears.

Lenoir-Rhyne held a 29-11 edge in shots and had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.  Luke McCarthy (Naples, FL/Naples HS) went the distance for the Indians and made 10 saves.  Tom Heath had five saves in a starting role for the Bears.  Stefan Dill had one save in the final minutes to share the shutout.
