Soccer Closes Year With 100-Goal Marathon
Catawba College head men’s soccer coach Liam Farrell and women’s soccer coach Michael Swan are pleased to announce that the 100-Goal Marathon Soccer Match was held successfully this past Sunday. The game was played at Frock Fields on Saturday, April 10th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The 2011 Goal Game was a fundraiser for the men’s and women’s soccer teams with all the proceeds being put towards each student-athlete and their respective programs.
On the day, players played in a small-sided tournament event, with music, and grilling ongoing throughout the day. The game its self was the men’s and women’s teams split into two sides, blue and white. The blue team was lead by Erinn Wescoat, and the White team was captained by Matt Stewart. The game was a fiercely contested affair with the Blue team ending up on top 51 to 49, with a last second volley to clinch it for the blues by assistant men’s coach Frank Cardelle.
The men’s and women’s soccer teams appreciated the supporters that came out to the field to cheer on the event. The two programs are grateful for all the help by donors and will look forward to next season. The men’s program will open in the fall against Appalachian State on September 1st at 7:00 pm, in Boone, NC, and the women’s program will open against St. Leo on September 1st at 6:00 pm, in St. Augustine, FL.
