Kurdi Nets Hat Trick as Men's Soccer Tops Mount Olive 4-0


SALISBURY, NC -- Freshman midfielder Adam Kurdi (Chapel Hill, NC/E.Chapel Hill HS) scored three goals, two in the second half, to help blow the game open and get Catawba (1-1) its first victory of the men’s soccer season.  The Indians won the match 4-0 on Saturday night at Frock Field.  Mount Olive fell to 0-2.

Already holding a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime, Corey Faughnan (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS) sent in a corner kick in the 49th minute which Kurdi connected with his head pass the Mount Olive keeper for 3-0 lead. Kurdi made it 4-0 in the 71st minute with an unassisted goal from 10 yards out for the final score.

The Indians took contol of the game in the third minute when Valentin Nava (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) took a pass into the penalty area and was brought down by a Trojan defender who was red-carded for denial of a goal scoring opportunity. Domhnall Minogue (Greystones, IRELAND/Presentation HS) calmly placed the penalty kick into the opponent’s goal for a 1-0 lead.

Catawba outshot Mount Olive 12-6, half of them on goal. Evan Harvey made three saves in net to keep a clean sheet.

The game was called in the 72nd minute due to lighting in the area.
