Early goals lead Men's Soccer over UNC-Pembroke

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College scored twice in the opening six minutes and went on to defeat UNC-Pembroke 3-1 in men’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. The Indians improve to 6-3 with the win, while UNC-Pembroke, ranked ninth in the Southeast Region, falls to 4-4. Catawba got its first goal when a Brave defender cleared into his own goal at the 3:20 mark. Freshman Kenny Crowe (Reeders, PA) followed with his first goal, off a corner kick, at the 5:58 mark for a 2-0 lead. Catawba increased its lead to 3-0 just before the half as Jake Pace (Salisbury, NC) drove home a rebound off a save by UNCP keeper Alex Hall (Knightdale, NC) in the 41st minute. The Braves cut into their three-goal deficit in the 60th minute as Joe Warenda (Wilson, NC) delivered off a corner kick. Pembroke could get no closer as David Durham (Oak Ridge, TN) saved six chances, five in the second half when the Braves recorded eight of their nine shots. Only four of Catawba’s 17 attempts came in the second half.
