Barton Slips Past Men's Soccer on Late Penalty
WILSON, NC--Eric Pajunk converted a penalty kick in the 89th minute to help Barton edge visiting Catawba 3-2 Saturday at the Barton Soccer Field. The Indians fall to 2-4 on the season and the Bulldogs improve to 4-1.
Catawba led 2-0 in the 59th minute after Corey Faughnan’s (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS) second offering of the evening was slotted past the keeper for a commanding lead. Deon Cuffie-Joseph (Arima, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO/High Point University) contributed the assist.
Barton needed just three minutes to counter as a deflection off a cross ended up in the back of the Indian net to cut the lead in half.
After facing several Bulldog corners in succession during the 78th minute, Catawba succumbed to the onslaught letting in a Ricardo Oliveira strike and tying the score at 2-2. Ten minutes later a Barton forward found his way in behind the Catawba defense, was fouled, leading to the game winner.
Faughnan put Catawba ahead five minutes into the second half with a 25-yard shot on a ball from Spencer Preston (Estero, FL/Estero HS).
Sophomore goalkeeper Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex HS) turned back eight Bulldog attempts at goal.
Catawba returns home to host Belmont Abbey on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7:00 pm.
