Football Falls 51-41 In Shootout With Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate won a shootout with host Catawba, taking a 51-41 victory in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The Bulldogs improve to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 2-6 and 1-4.
Cody Haffly (Locust Grove, GA) completed 20-of-31 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs in a game that saw the two teams combined for 920 yards total offense. Haffly used seven different receivers Saturday. Bulldog junior wide receiver Chris Bowden (Forsyth, GA) caught seven passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
Catawba’s Jacob Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS/Illinois) threw for a career-high 384 yards, completing 35-of-58 attempts. It tied the fourth-best passing game in school history and he was only three completions shy of Luke Samples’ school mark of 38. Charest threw for one score and ran for three more as he also led the Indians with 52 yards rushing.
Josh Covington (Charlotte, NC) led Wingate on the ground with 50 yards, while Nestor Lantigua (Wellington, FL) added 49. Of the 920 yards by the two teams, 705 came through the air. Eric Morman (Rockingham, NC/Richmond Sr. HS) had nine catches for 93 yards for Catawba, while Nate Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) made eight grabs for 146 yards.
Wingate grabbed momentum of the game midway through the first quarter, when with the game tied at 7-7 the Bulldogs blocked a Catawba field goal try and Jarvis Smith (Godfrey, IL) returned it 80 yards for a score. Later, after the Indians had trimmed the deficit to 14-10, a bad snap on a punt gave Wingate the ball at the Catawba 11-yard line and on the next play Bowden caught a pass from Haffly for a 21-10 edge just seconds in the second quarter.
The teams would trade scores for most of the quarter with the Bulldogs taking a 37-24 lead at the break following the first of three field goals from Paul Grammaticopoulos (Paris, FRANCE). He added s second midway through the third quarter for a 40-24 advantage the Wingate was able to match each Catawba score the rest of the way.
Clayton Hazeltine (Nokomis, FL) and Jared Seate (Charlotte, NC) combined for 25 tackles, two and half tackles for loss and one sack. Both Hazeltine and Seate had eight solo stops each. Warren Brown (Miami, FL) had 10 tackles and a blocked field goal.
Lakeem Perry (Louisburg, NC/Louisburg HS) had 12 tackles and one fumble recovery for Catawba. Casey Hall (Concord, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Averett) had eight tackles and two forced fumbles. CJ Barksdale (Simpsonville, SC/Hillcrest HS) had six tackles, two for loss, one quarterback sack and one QB hurry.
