Men's Soccer Shocks #25 Mars Hill in SAC Tourney
MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba defeated nationally ranked Mars Hill 1-0 in a South Atlantic Conference Tournament quarterfinal Tuesday evening at Meares Stadium. With the win the Indians continue their season and improve to 9-8-2 overall, while the Lions fall to 11-5-1.
After a scoreless draw at the break, Spencer Preston (Estero, FL/Estero HS) had a breakaway run in the 58th minute and sent a through ball to teammate Danny Sassano (Gastonia, NC/Forestview HS). Sassano touched the ball to the right to shake a defender as Mars Hill goalkeeper Zac Scott approached he lifted his shot over the net-minder's left shoulder and into the goal putting the Indians up 1-0.
Catawba would fend off the Lions and their 11 second-half shots for the remaining 30-plus minutes to hold on to victory. Indian goalkeeper Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex HS) made 11 stops while facing 22 shots to preserve the shutout.
The Indians avenged a 3-1 loss at home to the Lions earlier in the regular season.
Catawba advances as the #6 seed to meet #7 Lenoir-Rhyne (8-8-3), a 3-0 winner over #2 Tusculum, Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm in a SAC Tournament semifinal at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, SC.
