Men's Soccer Season Ends With Semifinal Loss at SAC Tournament

ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba fell to Lenoir-Rhyne 2-0 in a battle of upset first-round winners during a semifinal of the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament at the Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex.  The seventh-seeded Bears advance to Sunday’s final where they will face top-seeded Anderson.  The Cataba Indians, seeded-sixth, end its season at 9-9-2.

Lenoir-Rhyne got an early goal just five minutes into the match.  Joe Green headed home a corner kick from Chris Johnson to give his team the lead.  The goal was Green’s second of the season.

Despite both teams getting multiple shots-on-goal, the match went without another score until a Catawba miscue led to an own-goal in the 64th minute, putting L-R up 2-0.

A strong Bears defense, anchored by goalkeeper Stefan Dill, held on the rest of way, earning a berth in Sunday’s championship match.  Lenoir-Rhyne held a 20-9 edge in shots.  Catawba keeper Evan Harvey made four saves before giving way to Frankie Cardelle for the final 22 minutes.  Cardelle had two stops.
