Fourth-Quarter 97-Yard Drive Lifts Football to 17-13 Win at Brevard

BREVARD, NC -- Catawba snapped a four-game losing streak with a 17-13 victory over host Brevard in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Brevard Stadium.  The Catawba Indians improve to 3-7 overall and 2-4 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 3-7 and 1-5.

The Indians used a 97-yard, 15-play drive midway through the fourth quarter to rally from a 13-10 deficit.  Catawba took over on downs after Brevard had the ball inside the Indian 10 following the second interception on the day by Salonick Amos.  Kewone Harris (Durham, NC/Webb HS) broke up a third-down pass at the three and CJ Barksdale (Simpsonville, NC/Hillcrest HS) batted down a fourth-down pass to end the threat.

The Indians converted three times on third down and once on fourth down in the winning drive that began with 13:17 remaining.  Jacob Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS/Illinois) completed third down passes to Eric Morman (Rockingham, NC/Richmond Sr. HS) and Mario Washington (High Point, NC/Ragsdale HS) to move out to the 42-yard-line.  At midfield, Catawba kept the drive alive when Brevard jumped offside on fourth down.

Charest would find Washington again on third down for an 11-yard gain to the Tornado 29.  A personal foul penalty would move the ball to the 13 and two plays later Josh Wright (Raeford, NC/Hoke Co. HS/W. Carolina) ran in from nine yards out and Catawba led 17-13 with 6:34 remaining.

The defense made one last stand as Brevard moved to the Tribe 32 inside the final minutes.  Barksdale and Damein Lee (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville HS) combined on a third-down sack, while Jason Taylor (Bahama, NC/Northern HS) and Jacob Hanes (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) stopped a fourth-down pass short of the sticks.  The Indians were able to then run out the clock.

Charest threw for 171 yards and one score on 15-of-20 passing.  He was intercepted twice.  Wright led the ground game with 58 yards on 20 carries with the one score.  Morman had five catches for 56 yards and Nate Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) made five grabs for 54 yards.

Aaron Reese threw for 101 yards and ran for another 75 to lead Brevard.  He completed 7-of-13 passes with a touchdown and an interception and also scored on the ground.  Eric Watts caught three passes for 47 yards and a score, while Rodney Daniels added 39 yards rushing.

Catawba took an early lead, capping an opening 14-play, 59-yard drive with a 24-yard field goal from Thomas Trexler (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover HS).  The Indians drove inside the Brevard five late in the first quarter, but Charest was intercepted in the end zone on third down by Amos on the first play of the second quarter.

Brevard in turn marched in the Catawba red zone before turning it over on downs at the Tribe 16.  Catawba would use that momentum to strike for a 10-0 lead.  Charest hit two big pass plays, 27 yards to his brother Nate then a 21-yarder to Bobby Morrison (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) to the Tornado 24.  Three plays later Charest tossed a 10-yard strike to Morman for the 10-0 edge.

The Tornados were able to put a scoring drive together in the final two minutes of the half.  Andre Overholt had an 18-yard run to the Catawba 10-yard-line and Reese followed with a 10-yard pass to Watts to trim the deficit to 10-7 with only 42 seconds left in the half.  Brevard took the lead with the only points of the third quarter, coming on a one-yard run from Reese.  The point after was missed.

Harris led Catawba with 13 tackles, while Cory Johnson (Fayetteville, NC/Britt HS) added 10 stops.  Jumal Rolle (Wilson, NC/Beddingfield HS) had an interception.  Prince Simanyu totaled 18 tackles for Brevard.  Anthony Shakir and Rufus Jenkins also had double-digit tackles and a sack.
