Men's Soccer falls 1-0 to Carson-Newman

SALISBURY, NC -- Carson-Newman got a late second half goal and defeated host Catawba 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Frock Field. The Eagles improve to 3-8-1 overall and 1-3 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 8-5 and 3-2. In very wet field conditions, with both sidelines and endlines covered with water, the team sloshed it out for nearly 75 scoreless minutes until Bobby Leahy (Soddy Daisy, TN) headed home a cross from Jason McMillan (Gold Coast, AUSTRALIA) for the game’s lone score. McMillan had found open space and sent a cross to the back post that Leahy headed back to the far corner. Catawba had most of the scoring chances, outshooting the visitors 16-10, but Stian Alnes (Godoy, NORWAY) made a dozen saves to record the shutout. Carson-Newman had a chance to break the ice with 28 minutes remaining, but Eirik Pettersen (Spjelkavik, NORWAY) failed to convert on a penalty kick. Catawba nearly had a chance to tie in the closing minutes, initially being awarded a penalty kick, but was overruled after a referee’s conference with his assistant.
