Terry's Six Hits Helps Softball Take Two from UNCP


SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba swept a softball doubleheader from visiting UNC Pembroke on Sunday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The Catawba Indians claimed wins by the scores of 4-0 and 4-3 to improve to 7-1 overall.  The Braves fall to 0-7.

Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanly HS) collected a pair of RBI in the opener to back the complete game tossed by Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS).  Murray allowed just five hits and struck out two in improving to 3-1 with her second shutout of the young season. 

Huneycutt put Catawba on top in the first on single that followed a pair of two-out walks.   The Lady Indians stretched the lead in the fifth.  Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Sr. HS) led off with a double, one of her six hits in the doubleheader, and scored on a base hit by Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS).  Huneycutt followed with a RBI double to make it 3-0.

Terry completed her 3-for-4 performance in the opening game with a RBI-single in the sixth.  Murray got out of her only jam in the fourth when the Braves loaded the bases with one out.  The senior got a come-backer and a strikeout to end the frame.

Catawba rallied in game two to complete the sweep.  Down 2-0 in the in the fifth, the Lady Indians pushed across four runs, benefitting from a two-out error.  Huneycutt lofted a fly ball to right field with the bases loaded which fell in allowing the tying runs to score.  Kayla Myers (Bryson City, NC/Swain Co. HS) followed with a two-run single for the 4-2 lead.

UNC Pembroke had scored first on a two-run home run by Megan Hillard (Mooresville, NC), which came after a Catawba error.  The Braves got a run back in the sixth on a double by Kristen Hobbs (Granite Falls, NC) and had the tying run at second in the seventh, but Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) got Holly Berry (Seagrove, NC) to line out to center to end the game.

Selena Ashley (Walkertown, NC/E. Forsyth HS) got the win for Catawba, improving to 1-0.  She tossed five innings, allowing two unearned runs off three this with one strikeout.  Huneycutt got the save as she pitched the final two frames.

Terry was again hot at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple.  Two of her hits in the opener were doubles.  Brea Hartley (Lexington, NC) had two hits in each game for UNCP.
