Justice and Gibbs Help Softball to Split with Pfeiffer

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and visiting Pfeiffer split a softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The Falcons took the opener 2-0, while the Catabwa Indians claimed a 7-1 win in the nightcap.  Catawba now stands at 8-2 on the year.  Pfeiffer is 1-1.

Catawba scored early in game two to gain the split.  The Lady Indians took advantage of three Pfeiffer errors to score three times in the first.  A pair of two-out errors led to a run and kept the inning alive for Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS), who doubled home the final two runs of the frame.

Catawba put together three two-out hits in the second, capped by a two-run double by Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) to go up 5-0 after two innings.  Justice singled in the third and scored on another Falcon miscue.

Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) worked four scoreless innings before exiting in the fifth with a runner at second.  She allowed three hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.  Selena Ashley (Walkertown, NC/E. Forsyth HS) finished off the last two and two-thirds innings, allowing a run off three hits.

Justice and Gibbs finished with a pair of RBI with Justice having two hits.  Casey Baucom (Marshville, NC/Piedmont HS) stroked three singles in the nightcap for Catawba.  Tyresha Ellis (Jefferson, SC/Central HS) drove in the Pfeiffer run with a sixth-inning single.

Melanie Conklin (Wellington, NC) held Catawba to just four hits in posting the shutout in the opener.  She walked two and struck out 14.  The senior also picked up three hits at the plate and drove in the second run for the Falcons with a double in the third.

Pfeiffer scored the game’s lone runs in the third inning.  Lexie Brock (Knightdale, NC) led off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice.  Sadie Saine (Crouse, NC) doubled her in then Conklin followed with her RBI double.

Three of the four Catawba hits were doubles, but the Lady Indians stranded a runner at third twice with one out.  Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanly HS) led of the second with a two-bagger, but was stranded at third as was Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS), who doubled with one out in the fifth.  Gibbs was left at second after leading off the sixth with a double.
