Gibbs' Two Homers Help Softball Split Doubleheader With Limestone
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and Limestone battled to a split of a softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Saint won game one 4-2, while the Catawba Indians grabbed a 5-1 victory in the nightcap. The Lady Indians now stand at 13-6 on the year, while the Saints are 6-4.
Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) hit a pair of home runs to power Catawba to the split in game two. One pitch after getting second life on a dropped foul with two outs, Gibbs erased a 1-0 deficit with a two-run homer in the third. The Lady Indians added another unearned run in the fourth when Kelsey Burgess (Charlotte, NC/Gaston Christian/N. Greenville) doubled and later scored on a passed ball.
Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) and Gibbs connected on back-to-back homers for a 5-1 edge after five. Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) had plenty of support as she tossed the complete game, allowing just an unearned run off five hits. She improved to 7-1.
Limestone got a RBI-single from Kirstyn Burleson to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener. The Saints extended their lead to 4-0 on a three-run homer by Kayla Kelley in the fifth.
Catawba got one run back in the sixth on a single by Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS) and another in the seventh on a double by Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanly HS). The Lady Indians had the tying run at second with two outs by Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS) flew out to center to end the contest.
Shelby Webb got the win for the Saints. She went the distance, allowing one earned run off nine hits. She struck out five. Jordan Smith had a pair of hits for Limestone. Each starter had a hit for Catawba.
