Last-Minute Goal Denies Men's Soccer Potential Upset
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba came up on the short end of a tough 1-0 loss to visiting Lees-McRae in men's soccer action on Sunday night at Frock Field. Both teams even their mark at 1-1 after enduring just over an hour delay before the kickoff because of weather.
The Bobcats got the lone goal in the final minute. Keeper Thomas Rusling sent a free kick from about 10 yards on his side of midfield that was headed home by Scott Hudgins from around the top of the penalty box and found its way into the back of the net.
Catawba had appeared to have taken the lead with about 15 minutes remaining, but a tally from Ezra Ntirugelegwa (Durham, NC/Jordan HS) was waived off for an offsides call. The Bobcats had peppered the Indian net several times in the second half, but Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex HS) came up with three of his four saves in the final 45 minutes to keep the match scoreless.
Catawba will travel to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday for its next match and return home to host Barton on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm.
