Men's Soccer Plays to Another League Draw

HICKORY, NC -- Catawba and host Lenoir-Rhyne settled for a 1-1 tie in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action on Wednesday night at Belk Track.  It marks the second straight tie for the Catawba Indians to open league play, now standing at 3-2-2 overall and 0-0-2 in the SAC.  The Bears are 1-3-2 and 0-1-1.

Catawba found itself behind once again as the Bears tallied first when Tobias Tobrant headed home a cross from Mario Pinos Garcia in the 31st minute.  As the did four time vs. Anderson, the Indians were able to level the match.  In the 69th minute, Luke Kooyman (Salt Lake City, UT/Highland HS) knocked home a goal off a rebound from a shot by Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) that was initially saved.

The teams were even at 18 shots each, but Catawba had twice as many on goal, 12-6, as the Bears.  Lenoir-Rhyne nearly won the game in overtime, but a shot by Mehmet Karakilinc in the 104th minute went off the post.  Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS) had five saves in goal for Catawba, while Stefan Dill made 11 stops for LR.

Catawba will next host Newberry at Frock Field on Saturday at 2:30 pm.
