Men's Soccer Ups Unbeaten Streak to Six Matches
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba claimed a 4-1 win over visiting Chowan in men's soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The victory improves the Catawba Indians to 4-2-3 and extends their non-losing streak to six matches. The Hawks fall to 0-8.
Chowan shocked the hosts with a goal just 2:39 into the match. Eric Nguyen (Wilson, NC) crossed a ball to an unmarked Adam Smith (Clinton, NC) who fired in a shot from about 10 yards out for the early lead. Catawba regrouped and leveled the match in the 12th minute when Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) scored on a pass from Phillipe Violland (Rio de Janeiro, BRAZIL/Farias Brito).
Catawba took the lead on the hour as Corey Faughnan (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS) collected a ball from Smith at the top of the box and knocked home the winner. The Indians increased their lead in the 73rd minute as Valentin Nava (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) one-timed a cross from Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS). Ezra Ntirugelegwa (Durham, NC/Jordan HS) capped the scoring as he was sent through on a breakaway by Michael Waller (Zionsville, IN/Trinity Pawling HS).
Luke Harvey (Naples, FL/Naples HS) and Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex HS) shared goalkeeping duties with neither making a save as only one of seven Hawk shots were on goal. Grayson Smith (Wilmington, NC) made three saves for Chowan.
Catawba travels to Mars Hill on Friday for a 7:30 pm league match against the SAC leaders.
