Conte Strikes in Overtime as Women's Soccer Tops Pfeiffer

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba junior Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, CANADA/Holy Trinity Catholic) scored two minutes into the second overtime period to lift the hosts to a 3-2 win over Pfeiffer in women's soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field.  The win marks the fourth straight for the Catawba Indians, who improve to 7-4.  The Falcons fall to 5-5.

Conte ran on to a low driven corner kick from Taylor Arrowood (Matthews, NC/Weddington HS) at the near post and sent it just inside the far post for the game winner in the 102nd minute. It was the first overtime win on the season for the Lady Indians after three earlier losses.

Conte scored the initial goal of the match in the seventh minute.  Sophie Waller (Watford, ENGLAND/St. Michael’s Catholic) pushed in a through ball to Conte at the top of the box, who settled then slid a shot under Falcon keeper Britt Polly (Boca Raton, FL).

Pfeiffer got that goal back in the 21st minute as Stephanie Hardig (Statesville, NC) finally kicked home a loose ball in front of the Catawba goal following a corner kick.  Waller struck to put Catawba back on top just two minutes before the half as she sent a shot from 20 yards just over the arms of Polly.

The Falcons equalized again, this time in the 67th minute as defender Mandi Roan (North Richland Hills, TX) drove in a long shot of her own from 30 yards out that went just under the bar.  Arrowood nearly won it for Catawba in the 80th minute, but Polly saved the attempt.  Pfeiffer had another long shot in overtime tipped over the bar by Catawba keeper Angelica Pawlowski (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman HS).

Pawlowski had three saves for Catawba, while Polly stopped two shots for the Falcons.  The shots were even at eight apiece.  Catawba returns to league action on Friday, traveling to Carson-Newman for a 5 p.m. match.
