Women's Soccer Falls to Wingate

SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate sophomore Jade Montgomery (Monroe, NC) scored three second-half goals to rally the Bulldogs past host Catawba 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Frock Field.  Wingate wins its fifth in a row to improve to 8-1-1 overall and 5-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians have a five-match winning streak snapped in falling to 8-5 and 3-3.

Catawba scored the lone goal of the opening half as Karen Presnell (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS) netted her fourth of the year from 10 yards out in the 35th minute.  Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, CANADA/Holy Trinity Catholic) sent a ball to Amy Iwanicki (Calgary, Alberta, CANADA/St. Francis HS/Tennessee-Martin), who slotted the ball to an unmarked Presnell Presnell and junior assisted on the play, as Presnell netted her fourth goal of the year.

The Bulldogs tied it eight minutes into the second half, when a free kick from just inside midfield from Holly Holsclaw (Matthews, NC) was headed in by Montgomery, making it 1-1.  Montgomery put the Bulldogs on top nine minutes later, taking a lead pass from Katie Simpson (Indian Trail, NC) and beating the keeper in the lower left corner to make it 2-1.

Montgomery finished the hat trick in the 75th minute. A shot from Shelby Forza (Pickering, Ontario, CANADA) was saved by Catawba keeper Angelica Pawlowski (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman HS), but Montgomery took the rebound for the 14th time this season.

Wingate Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta, CANADA) registered seven saves for Wingate, including a pair of diving saves early in the second half right after the Bulldogs tied it at one. Pawlowski piled up 10 saves for the Indians on the afternoon.

Catawba will travel to Tusculum on Saturday for a 5 p.m. match.
