Volleyball Drops Five-Setter at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Host Mars Hill rallied late in the fifth set to grab a win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Arena. The Lions won the match 21-25, 25-14, 26-24, 19-25 and 16-14 to improve to 12-9 overall and 5-6 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 8-11 and 5-6.
Catawba had battled back from an 8-6 deficit in the final set to go on top 13-11 after a kill from Carson Brewer (Raleigh, NC/Middle Creek HS/Cape Fear CC). Mars Hill came out of a time out to score three straight points on kills from Marissa Wixson and Regan Macomson then a combo block from Macomson and Megan Parks. A kill from Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) staved off one match point for the Lady Indians, but the Lions took the match on a kill from Macomson and a block by Hillary Gambrell.
Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) led the Lady Indians with 26 kills and added 15 digs. Parrish produced a triple-double with 13 kills, 10 digs and 22 assists. Brewer posted 16 kills and had 10 digs, while libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Henry HS) recorded 35 digs.
Wixson tallied 18 kills with 11 digs for Mars Hill. Toni Cole followed with 14 kills, while Macomson picked up 12 kills. Libero Maggie Murphy totaled 24 digs, while setters Hannah Wilson and Becca Smith each handed out 25 assists.
Consecutive kills from Whitmer and a kill and block from Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland HS) in a five-point run helped the Lady Indians to an 11-7 lead in the opening set. An ace by Young stretched the lead to 17-11 and Parrish would kill off the final point.
Mars Hill scored the first four points of set two, including two kills from Wixson and an ace from Cole. An ace from Smith and a kill from Macomson moved the lead to 15-9. Wixson would kill off the set point.
The third set was tight throughout with Mars Hill going up 20-18 late in the set. Whitmer tallied consecutive kills to pull Catawba even at 21-all. A kill from Wixson gave Mars Hill a set point, but Parrish staved off the set point with a Catawba kill. Wixson would end the set on back-to-back kills.
Whitmer had three kills and a block to help Catawba grab a 14-8 edge in set four. The Lions got within 19-17 on a kill from Gambrell, but Catawba got a kill from Savannah Tomlinson (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach HS/UNCG) and two from Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) to lead 22-17. Whitmer had two kills to get to set point which ended on a Lion error.
Catawba stays on the road next week as it will travel to Brevard on Friday for a 6:30 p.m. match.Related Item: Box Score
