Gallup Helps Pace Volleyball to Sweep at Brevard

BREVARD, NC -- Catawba swept past host Brevard in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Boshamer Gym.  The Catawba Indians improve to 9-11 overall and 6-6 in the SAC with the 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 win.  The Tornados fall to 9-13 and 1-11.

Freshman Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland HS) led Catawba with 17 kills, while Carson Brewer (Raleigh, NC/Middle Creek HS/Cape Fear CC) added nine kills, nine digs and three block.  Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) recorded four blocks, libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Henry HS) posted 14 digs and setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) handed out 33 assists.

Fatima Gharachorloo had 16 kills for Brevard, while Amanda Possidente added 14 kills.  Sydney Yeomans registered 15 digs and Kayla Hanus delivered 34 assists.

Late in the first set, Catawba used kills from Raye and Brewer along with a Brevard error to snap a 19-19 tie and go up by three points.  A kill from Gallup made the score 24-20 and Young got a kill for the set point.

Catawba led by as many as three points early in set two, but Brevard rallied and pulled even at 16-all on a Gharachorloo kill.  An ace by Hanus and a kill from Kortney Conner put the Tornados up 19-18.  Down 21-19, Catawba ran off five straight points.  Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) started the run on a kill with Young adding an ace and Brewer and Richardson a combo block.  The set ended on a Tornado error.

The Lady Indians were behind most of the third set, trailing 14-7 at one point.  A kill from Lanier and two blocks from Richardson started the Catawba rally which tied the set at 17-all on a kill from Brewer.  Gallup had three late kills to help Catawba pull away from a 20-18 edge.  Ashley Brown (Hendersonville, NC/N. Henderson HS) would kill off match point.

Catawba returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
