Football places three on academic all-district squad
Catawba College placed three players on the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District III football team. Representing the Tribe are quarterback Luke Samples (Elkin, NC), Todd McComb (Thomasville, NC) and wide receiver Nick Means (Thomasville, NC). The three will advance to the national ballot for selection for Academic All-America competing against those named from the other seven districts. Samples has started every game at quarterback for the Tribe and has passed for 1,985 yards and 13 touchdowns. The sophomore is just under 200 yards shy of setting a school mark for passing yards in a season. Samples is a Dean’s List student with a 3.47 GPA in business administration.McComb receives the honor for the third time. The senior leads the squad with 67 tackles, including four sacks and nine stops for losses. The three-time All-South Region pick and 2001 All-American has a 3.45 GPA in mathematics.
Means is also a repeat selection as he earned academic all-district honors in 2001 as well. This season, he is second on the team with 41 catches and holds Catawba’s career marks for receptions (172) and yards (2,652). In 2001, Means was named the South Atlantic Conference scholar athlete for football and carries a 3.51 GPA in business administration.
