White Beats Blue in Football Spring Game


SALISBURY, NC -- The White rallied from a halftime deficit to top the Blue 10-6 in Catawba's annual Blue-White Spring Game on Saturday morning at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.  Catawba will open its 2013 season on Saturday, September 7 as it hosts West Liberty at 1:30 p.m.

In the final half, the White used a grinding possession on the ground to go on top 7-6 following BJ Sherrill's eight-yard run at the 4:04 mark of the third quarter.  LJ McCray set a field goal with an interception and a return deep inside Blue territory.  Chad Hollandsworth upped the lead to 10-6 on a 19-yard field to open the final quarter.

The Blue had one final chance, driving to the White 20 in the final minute.  Make Sheehan had passes of 21 yards to Shaq Hooper and 39 yards to Bruce Smith to set up the chance.  The White snuffed out the opportunity with a pair of sacks on the next two plays then broke up the final desperation pass on fourth and long.

Sheehan had given the Blue a halftime lead on his 19-yard pass to Diante Hodges.  He set up the score with a 32 yard run.  The Blue went for two, but Nate Charest was stopped short on a run.

Sherrill went 8-of-15 through the air of 63 yards for the White.  He added 34 yards rushing.  Xavier Bond and Channon Crawford each added 32 yards on the ground.  Jason Williams caught four passes for 33 yards.

Sheehan threw for 147 yards on 7-of-18 passing for the Blue.  Bruce Smith had two catches for 67 yards.  Tyler Hamilton had a pair of catches as did Nate Charest, who also completed a pass for seven yards.
