Football Finishes Up Final Mid-Week Practice Before the Season Opener
The Catawba Football program kicks off its season this Saturday against West Virginia’s West Liberty University at 1:30 pm. Entering this year there are a lot of unknowns to the Catawba team. With a new coaching staff leading the way, a high profile transfer to rely on, and a change is schemes and atmosphere many fans are wondering what to expect from Catawba this year.
With just three days of practice left until kickoff Catawba Head Coach, Curtis Walker, broke down the Indians practice from Wednesday to give the fans an insight of what to expect from this year’s squad.
Special Teams started off practice with kicker Chad Hollandsworth (Kernersville, NC/E. Forsyth HS) making 35 and 47 yard field goals.
The team followed that up with offense versus defense drills in 1st-and-10 situations. Coach Walker stated that both sided played very well with neither side dominating the session.
In 7-on-7 skeleton drills, sophomore Gary Williams (Southport, NC/S. Brunswick HS) intercepted a pass for the defense. Transfer senior quarterback Danny O’Brien (Kernersville, NC/E. Forsyth HS/Wisconsin) showed why he has earned the starting position by completing five consecutive passes.
Catawba finished up practice with another session of offense versus defense. The defense showed their tenacity by forcing two separate three and out series. Walker commented that the offense still moved the ball very well in the remainder of the practice.
Afterwards, Walker said “I am real happy with the energy these men are showing. They are intense and focusing in on their targets.”
