Football Rolls to Mayor's Cup Trophy Win Over Livingstone

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba's defense turned in another solid performance and the offense rolled up over 500 yards in claiming the Mayor's Cup with a 42-16 win over host Livingstone in football action on Saturday night at Alumni Memorial Stadium.  The Catawba Indians improve to 2-0, while the Blue Bears fall to 0-2.

Quarterback Danny O'Brien (Kernersville, NC/E. Forsyth HS/Wisconsin) was nearly perfect as he completed 20-of-24 passes for 262 yards and three scores.  Nate Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) hauled in seven of those throws for 68 yards and a score.  O'Brien also threw scoring strikes to Carlos Tarrats (Jacksonville, FL/Raines HS) and David Burgess (Morganton, NC/Freedom HS).

Catawba racked up 516 yards of total offense, including 210 on the ground and 306 in the air.  Livingstone produced 392 yards of offense, but the majority in the fourth quarter when the outcome had long been decided.  The Indian defense recorded six sacks, picked off a pass and recovered a fumble.

The Catawba defense forced a three-and-out on the first Livingstone possession and O'Brien guided the Indians to a score and the lead for good.  He converted a third-and-17 with Charest early in the drive and later found Charest for 25 yards to the Blue Bear four.  Cary Littlejohn (Columbus, NC/Polk Co. HS) carried in from two-yards out and it was 7-0.

Livingstone threatened late in the opening quarter, moving to the Catawba 10.  A penalty forced the Blue Bears back and Terence Williams (Duluth, GA/Duluth HS) ended the threat with an interception on third down.  Early in the second quarter, O'Brien got a drive going with a 37-yard pass to Vincent Beam (North Wilkesboro, NC/Wilkes Central HS) to the Livingstone 23.  Burgess ran it inside the 10 and O'Brien hooked up with Charest for the score and a 14-0 advantage.

Burgess capped off the next drive, bursting in from 20 yards with 5:07 left in the half.  Catawba would add another score before the break on a 46-yard pass from O'Brien to Tarrats.  Catawba had 306 yards by the half, while the defense had limited the Blue Bears to just 116.

Early in the second half, O'Brien connected on a 14-yard scoring pass to Burgess and Lorenzo Pooler (Fayetteville, NC/Byrd HS) ran in from six-yards out to put the game out of reach at 42-0.  Livingstone got on the board late in the third quarter on a 32-yard field goal from Leonardo Manzo.  Drew Powell threw for one score and ran for another in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

Powell completed 24-of-38 passes for 334 yards to lead the Livingstone offense.  Anthony Holland had seven catches for 126 yards.

Reserve quarterback Mike Sheehan (Wilmington, NC/Laney HS) led Catawba with 59 yards rushing, including a long run of 49 yards.  Littlejohn added 52 yards on nine carries.  LJ McCray (Charlotte, NC/Harding HS) and Gabriel Evans (Fayetteville, NC/Pine Forest HS) were both in on a pair of sacks, while Damein Lee (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville HS) had a sack, another stop for a loss and led the team with seven tackles.

Catawba opens South Atlantic Conference place next weekend as the Indians host Newberry for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Shuford Stadium.
